Tess of the d'Urbervilles earned unfavorable reviews when it originally came out, in part because it questioned the sexual standards of late Victorian England, despite the fact that it is now regarded as a significant 19th-century English novel and Hardy's masterpiece. Tess was shown as a champion of both her own and other people's rights. The book is set in Thomas Hardy's imagined Wessex, a rural area of impoverished England.
