The second edition of this superbly illustrated book equips practitioners with all the information that they will require in order to perform echocardiography appropriately and to interpret findings correctly. After clear exposition of fundamentals of the examination technique via both the transthoracic and the transesophageal approach, the functional anatomy of all normal and pathologic thoracic structures as observed on echocardiography is presented in detail. A wide range of basic and advanced applications of echocardiography in the emergency, perioperative, and intensive care settings are…mehr

A wide range of basic and advanced applications of echocardiography in the emergency, perioperative, and intensive care settings are then described. A final supplementary section considers further applications of ultrasound in the ICU, such as in patients with respiratory failure, trauma, or venous thrombosis. This edition has been extensively revised and updated and includes entirely new chapters on various techniques and applications. It will be a tremendous aid to current best practice for all intensivists, emergency physicians, and anesthesiologists who intend to use echocardiography and ultrasound for diagnosis and guidance of optimal management in the critically ill.

Armando Sarti graduated from the University of Florence, Italy before becoming a certified specialist in Anesthesia and Intensive Care (1983), Cardiology (1988), and Pediatrics (1995). Since 1982 he has served as an anesthetist and intensivist at many hospitals in Florence before becoming head of the department of anesthesia and intensive care at the Burlo Garofolo Mother and Child Hospital, Trieste, Italy. He is currently Director of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Emergency and Critical Care Department of Santa Maria Annunziata Hospital, Florence, Italy. Throughout his career, he has used cardiovascular and pleuro-pulmonary ultrasound as an essential tool to guide the diagnosis and management of cardiocirculatory and respiratory failure. He has devoted his efforts to the study, practice, and development of ultrasound to treat patients in bedside and emergency contexts, and in both medical and surgical intensive care units. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 publications on emergency, anesthesia, and intensive care, in national and international literature. He co-edited, with Dr. Luca F. Lorini, the first English edition of the present book "Echocardiography for Intensivists", published by Springer in 2012. F. Luca Lorini graduated from the University of Pavia, Italy and specialized in Anesthesia and Intensive Care. He served as an anesthetist and intensivist in Bergamo, Italy, until he became head of the department of anesthesia and intensive care at the Clinica Montevergine of Mercogliano, Italy, in 1997. In 2001 he moved back to Bergamo to lead the anesthesia service and the ICU at the Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo. He is currently chairman of the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo, Italy. Throughout his career, he has investigated the use of cardiovascular and pleuro-pulmonary ultrasound to facilitate the diagnosis and management of cardiocirculatory and respiratory failure. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications on anesthesia and intensive care in national and international literature. He is co-editor, with Dr. Armando Sarti, of the first English edition of the present book "Echocardiography for Intensivists," published by Springer in 2012.
