That's Life is a compilation of previously published written works by Edward Shaw. These include biographies and events associated with the lives of what he calls "Uncommonly Interesting Historical Figures." Reflecting his own diversity of interests, the works range from stories about the great writers of the Romantic era to those about the nitty gritty realists; from the unique histories of film stars to those of classical musicians and singers; and from tales capturing the uniqueness of an Old West gunslinger to those about the scandalous woman who was America's first presidential candidate. The author, who came to writing after retiring from a career as an academic and nonprofit executive, has also included several fictional short stories, some of his original poetry, and a number of memoir-like personal recollections. His memories of California's rural life in the 1940s followed by his later experiences at UC Berkeley and UCLA afford us a unique backdrop on the ebb and flow of societal change we have witnessed over the past century.

Autorenporträt
Edward A. Shaw is a published essayist, short story writer, biographer, and occasional newspaper columnist. Sometimes he tries his hand at poetry. He came to writing late in life following a career in academe and the nonprofit world. After earning BS, MBA and PhD degrees from the University of California, Berkeley and UCLA, he was appointed dean of UCLA's Placement and Career Planning Center, followed later by an appointment as assistant vice-chancellor. He also has taught in UCLA's Graduate School of Management and San Diego State University's School of Business. Earlier, while pursuing his doctorate and MBA, he did concurrent work as a consultant and executive in the human resources field and executive compensation. Dr. Shaw retired after a successful two-decade career leading national nonprofit organizations in medicine and healthcare. In the years following his retirement, he has spent time writing, collecting wines, becoming a Master Gardener, engaging in an intensive daily exercise regimen, and tending to his oversize garden on a hillside in Laguna Beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Approaching age ninety, he is especially content when surrounded by family and friends - especially his wife of fifty-seven years, his daughters and their husbands, and his grandsons - who join him in conversation, a glass of wine, or perhaps an occasional cigar.
