Richard Sadleir was an Irish-born Australian politician who served from 6 May 1794 to 6 March 1889. He was born in Cork, Ireland, to landowner James Sadleir. Despite his desire to attend the clergy, he joined the Royal Navy in 1808 and traveled extensively before returning to Ireland as a lieutenant in 1821. He moved to New South Wales in 1825 and married Ann Cartwright in 1829. He was a pioneer on the Hunter River beginning in 1826 and a schoolmaster at the Male Orphan School in Liverpool beginning in 1829. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Lower Hunter in 1861, but he did not run again in 1864. From 1872 to 1873, he was an alderman and the first mayor of Liverpool. Sadleir passed away in Liverpool in 1889. Sadleir, a Sydney suburb, was named for him.
