Now that I'm thinking about it, the story began even before that, with an invitation to spend the summer at my grandparents' beach cottage on the Gulf of Mexico. Let me tell you this amazing story as it unfolded.

Claire Datnow grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. Growing up in Africa, Claire liked nothing better than to visit the special animals of the African veldt in the game parks. She wears many colorful hats-nature lover, conservationist, historian, world traveler, and writer. She taught gifted and talented children in the Birmingham, Alabama Public School System. Claire is passionate about inspiring young people to become wise stewards of the natural environment. She has received numerous awards, including a Fulbright Memorial Fund teacher scholarship to Japan, the Blanche Dean Award for Environmental Education, and Birmingham Public Schools Teacher of the Year. She and Dr. Boris, her husband, are the proud grandparents of six lovely granddaughters, and two handsome grandsons. Claire loves to visit schools, sharing her excitement for reading and writing with students. Making author visits to schools allows Claire to connect with her readers. Claire also enjoys speaking at author conferences and teacher workshops.
