Based on the unequivocal principle that reading is a fundamental cultural asset for contemporary man, this paper seeks to share the experiences of the Group for Literary Studies in the Amazon and Reader Training (GELAFOL), at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), in training literary reading mediators. Coordinated by Prof. Dr. Nilo Carlos Souza, the group has been working to encourage reading in schools and promoting events that reflect on literature and reading. The book proposes a reflection on the need (read right) to literary reading within the context of the Amazon region, especially in the state of Pará. With this in mind, we first carry out a brief analysis of official reading indices in Brazil, highlighting those of the Northern Region, in order to build a reflection on the need to train reading mediators. In this way, we intend to point out ways to discuss the development of actions aimed at overcoming some of the difficulties identified in the process of training readers in schools.
