The American is a novel written by Henry James, originally published in 1877. The story follows the journey of Christopher Newman, a wealthy American businessman who travels to Europe in search of culture and adventure. In Paris, he meets and falls in love with Claire de Bellegarde, a beautiful and aristocratic Frenchwoman. However, he soon discovers that Claire's family is not as welcoming as he had hoped, and he faces numerous obstacles in his pursuit of her hand in marriage. Along the way, Newman must navigate the complexities of European society and confront his own beliefs and values as an American in a foreign land. The American is a classic tale of love, culture clash, and self-discovery, and is widely regarded as one of James' most important works. He performed this ceremony on the following day, when, by appointment, Christopher Newman went to dine with him. Mr. and Mrs. Tristram lived behind one of those chalk-colored facades which decorate with their pompous sameness the broad avenues manufactured by Baron Haussmann in the neighborhood of the Arc de Triomphe. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
