Autorenporträt
Dr. Joseph Elias Haynes (1848-1911), was a former slave, colored leader, preacher, physician, author, and close student of ethnology. Born a slave in South Carolina, served in 104th Regiment of Colored Volunteers during Civil War, graduated from Atlanta University and Howard University. Worked in the US Printing Office in Washington DC, and was a county school commissioner in Charleston. He studied medicine and became a physician in 1894. Served 4 years as the dean of theology at Allen University in South Carolina.
