It is certain, however, that the people who settled themselves in Hindustan Proper which lies to the north of the Vindya Mountains, came from the north, and called themselves Aryans. The country to the south of the Vindya Mountains they called the Deccan, i. e., south, and thought it was inhabited by bears, monkeys, goblins and monsters.
