James C. Gardner, MD, coauthored two previous books, Overcoming Anxiety, Panic, and Depression: New Ways to Regain Your Confidence and Phobias and How to Overcome Them: Understanding and Beating Your Fears. The Anxiety Toolbox Program, which expands on the work of his previous books, is in its third edition, with previous iterations having been published online. After receiving his BA and BS degrees from Stanford in 1982 and graduating in 1986 from UCLA School of Medicine, Dr. Gardner became a resident in internal medicine at Children's Hospital of San Francisco and embarked on a thirty-year career in private medical practice. Over that time, he has treated and counseled thousands of patients with anxiety and mood disorders, witnessing the toll taken by anxiety, grief, and depression on quality of life. He remains determined to do all he can to help patients through their periods of suffering. Dr. Gardner has also served as clinical instructor at UCSF and Stanford Schools of Medicine.
