This book adopts an industry-oriented approach in the field of subtitling and presents a wide spectrum of what is technologically available at the moment for subtitlers and subtitling in general. Various language assistive tools like machine translation engines and translation memory software that have either been developed in collaborative projects or in the private sector are being discussed critically, with regards to their features and availability in the subtitling market, in order to map the progress of technology in subtitling. Qualitative and quantitative data have been collected from both sides of the market (users (subtitlers) and developers (translation software developers)) in order to understand the tendency of the industry as well as its needs to reach higher productivity in less time. One of the main conclusions however is that subtitling is stepping towards a new era; since traditional subtitling software is gradually transformed into online, easily accessible and flexible applications.
