The Awakening, originally titled A Solitary Soul, is set in New Orleans and on the Louisiana Gulf coast at the end of the 19th century. The plot centers on Edna Pontellier and her struggle between her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century American South.

Kate Chopin was born Catherine O'Flaherty in St. Louis in 1850. Her father died when she was young, and she was raised in a home with her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, all widows. She married Oscar Chopin, a cotton merchant, but after having six children, she too was left a widow. Kate Chopin also wrote the novel, At Fault, and over 100 short stories including, "The Story of an Hour," "The Storm," and "Désirée's Baby." She is known for her stories that feature southern "local color" and sensitive, intelligent women in the 1890s.
