With The Beggar's Opera (1728), Gay invented the ballad opera. It is here published for the first time with its sequel, Polly, in which Macheath and Polly Peachum are transplanted to the West Indies. Together the plays offer a scathing and ebullient portrait of a society in which statesmen and outlaws are impossible to tell apart.

Autor

Hal Gladfelder is the author of Criminality and Narrative in Eighteenth-Century England: Beyond the Law (Johns Hopkins, 2001) and an edition of Cleland's Memoirs of a Coxcomb (Broadview, 2005). His most recent book is a study of Cleland's life and career, Fanny Hill in Bombay: The Making and Unmaking of John Cleland (Johns Hopkins, 2012).
