Autorenporträt
Writing poetry began early, his mother encouraged him to write. Whatever he passed to her whether written on a brown paper bag she said was good. Maybe that's where its starts, when you begin to believe you are actually good at something. Not that you are good at it but someone else believing and encouraging you in the endeavor has to be inspiring. His hosting and performing skills dates back to the second grade in Dallas, Texas strangely his first starring role he was a doctor of punctuation, fixing words and sentences, his next feature was the rabbit in 'Alice In Wonderland'. There is something magical in the noise of silence when the audience is listening. He has performed poetry and hosted events since the 1980's. He has written scripts, directed, worked behind the camera and co-founded one of the first Minority Owned Productions companies in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. The shows aired locally were "Impact With Willis Johnson", "Sound And Style Showcase" on channel 33, channel 21 and channel 8. The last two shows were a Poetry based show shot in a club formerly known as Blue Cat Blues located Deep Ellum, Dallas the house bands were Common Folk and Yarbrough and Peoples, and a comedy based show hosted by a famous comedian at Vocurea (spelling incorrect) located in formerly Red Bird Mall that never quite got off the ground. No matter the journey writing has always remained at the forefront. For AJ Houston Poetry has always been life and life has always been Poetry.
