In rural England, Ashworth Hall, an imposing manor house steeped in history, becomes the scene of a family drama of devastating intensity. Sir Archibald Blackwood, an authoritarian and manipulative patriarch, is found dead in suspicious circumstances after gathering his six children for an annual reunion. As the already palpable tensions between the heirs explode, Inspector Harold Brimsley is called in to investigate. Each family member hides secrets and harbors deep grudges against the deceased, turning the case into a web of intrigue and lies. Clues, including coded letters, misplaced objects and contradictory testimony, lead Harold into the dark recesses of the house and the tormented souls of its inhabitants. But Ashworth Hall, with its hidden passageways and oppressive past, is much more than a setting: it's a character in its own right, the guardian of the Blackwoods' secrets. As the inspector uncovers the late patriarch's Machiavellian plan to manipulate his family even in death, he comes face to face with a disconcerting revelation: the murder, far from being a simple quarrel over inheritance, is the fruit of a chilling manipulation. As the masks come off, Harold realizes that the truth may well seal the Blackwoods' fate... and that of the house itself.
