The Garden of God (1923) and The Gates of Morning (1924) are the other two books in the Blue Lagoon trilogy; this book is the first in (1925). The 1980 film The Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins was the most notable of the novel's many cinematic adaptations. Dick and Emmeline Lestrange, two cousins, and a galley cook are the main characters of the tale. They are marooned on an island in the South Pacific as a result of a disaster. Paddy Button, the galley cook, takes charge of the kids and teaches them how to survive while warning them to stay away from "Arita" berries, which he refers to as "the never-wake-up berries." In the meantime, Dick, Emmeline, and Hannah row their lifeboat to the location where they grew up with Paddy. While Dicky cuts bananas on the shore, Emmeline breaks a branch off the poisonous arita plant. Emmeline doesn't notice Hannah's tossing one of the oars into the water when she's in the boat with her son. Emmeline and Hannah are stuck on the boat as it is swept into the lagoon by the incoming tide.
