I loved how the story slowly unfolded, revealing tiny details that solved the great puzzle about the disappearance of two women living in the same town, both leaving a grieving daughter and family. But while Eleanor is still a child, growing up mostly in her father's bookstore, Ruby is already an old woman, but the grief is no less painful and caused her to live almost like a recluse in her mansion. When her niece visits unexpectedly and befriends Eleanor, long buried memories and secrets are unearthed. Together, Eleanor and Ruby may come to peace with their mothers' fate and their loss. The story was told in a very emotional and captivating way, and though I think there were some lengths in it, as I found the description of Rubys thoughts and feelings a bit repetitive, the outcome was really fantastic. A surprising read about family, loss and the power of friendship.
