Lowell Davis loves rural landscape and farm life. Born and raised in Red Oak, near Carthage, Missouri, Davis is well known as the Grandfather of Rural Art. His detailed porcelain sculptures of domesticated farm animals are famous all over the United States and internationally as well. Davis says, Everything that I've done in my life, and everything that I've known, I've put into my art. Davis was raised in the back of an old general store where he learned how to whittle, carve, and paint from the old men who frequented the establishment. He went to Carthage High School, where he actually failed art and English his sophomore year. Discouraged, he quit and joined the Air Force. Afterwards, he took some philosophical art courses at Pittsburg State University and Joplin Junior College, but he really learned about art from artists who impressed him throughout his career. He later worked as an art director for an advertising agency near Dallas, Texas, until becoming successful enough as a wildlife artist that he could concentrate on his own work. In 1977 he received a contract from the German-owned Kaiser Porcelain Company, enabling him to move back to his hometown in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. There he bought an old, fallen-down farm and seventeen roosters. Davis has traveled all over the country, selling his paintings and sculptures in art shows, but prefers life on his farm, where he raised five children. He has spent much of his money and free time building up the farm and the surrounding area. His unique farm-life figurines are available in shops around the world and have been featured in the Saturday Evening Post, Country Living, and Collector's Mart. Davis is an inductee into the Agricultural Hall of Fame and a noted speaker on limited-edition collectibles. In 1977, he cofounded the Midwest Gathering of the Artists, an organization in which he is still active today. He continues his artistic trade, explaining, I feel like anything that I do, I really want to make a statement.
