The Bowman Legacy is a novel of love, freedom, and war. Lillian and her husband move to Timbuctoo, a small all black town in Burlington County, New Jersey. The town was settled by free born and runaway blacks and Quakers. It isn't long before they discover that the town is a stop on the Underground Railroad. A few years before the outbreak of the Civil War, a young orphaned girl, Samantha Hunter, searches for freedom from a life of solitude. She has been abandoned at a young age by her only parent and left to fend for herself. Josiah Gilbert, accused of murdering the Overseer on a Maryland plantation, runs away. His search for freedom brings him to Timbuctoo where he and Samantha are welcomed into the Bowman and Bissett families and they too become instrumental in helping runaways find freedom in northern states. The Bowman Legacy chronicles the lives of people who bravely survived the atrocities of slavery and subsequently worked hard to help other slaves find freedom. They are committed to the abolition of slavery and the young men of Timbuctoo eagerly join the army and bravely fight to end slavery. The War will change all of their lives forever.
