The Boy and the River Recollections of a young boy who travels with his parents, from the city of Georgetown in British Guiana, to live in an undeveloped area of the country. The homestead he lived in was situated on the bank of the Berbice river, and nearby was an Arawak settlement- the Calcuni Mission. His story is fascinating. He describes the vastness of the river, the forest, the animals, birds, and fruit in the region. You will find yourself enjoying his first hand experience of the way of life of the Arawak Indians with whom he spends most of his time. After 12 years, he leaves the area for the town of New Amsterdam, to finish his education and join the work force. However, his years of growing up on the river gives him a unique view of the way of life of people in the town.
