In the coming-of-age years spent in what is now, but not then known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World, many dangers and adventures were experienced by this boy, and he was slowly changed by them. When he left Churchill at age twelve, he was not the same as he was when he first arrived. He was now a Churchill boy, a boy tempered by Polar Bear Town. He was now more like the Indigenous boys who developed strength of character and trusting friendships uniquely forged from learning to rely on each other, boys who grew up together among the polar bears on the shore of Hudson Bay. These reflections are based on actual events and chronicle the life and times of that Churchill boy and the other kids who lived on the shores of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba in the early years of the 1950's. Cultural sensitivities of the 21st century did not exist then in the same manner as they do now. The stories told herein reflect the language and attitudes as they actually, but differently then existed. They capture the noble character and spirit of the Indigenous kids who lived in those days, so that they may be remembered, and so future generations may be inspired by them.
