The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest breeds of terrier and originates from the Scottish Highlands. The Cairn Terrier is one of Scotland's earliest recorded breeds of working dog. The breed's name is derived from its working purpose: to hunt and chase rodents found between the cairns located in the Scottish Highlands. Unusually the breed tends to be left-pawed, which is a trait that commonly correlates to a superior sense of smell and performance in scent related tasks and hunting. The Cairn Terrier has an abundant, coarse and shaggy outer coat and a dramatically softer undercoat. Despite having a dense and relatively long coat, the Cairn Terrier tends to shed very little. The breed's coat comes in five common colorations which are: black, cream, brindle, deep red and light gray. Despite being a relatively small breed, the Cairn Terrier is a highly playful and energetic dog! It is important to make sure that you properly exercise your Cairn Terrier as, due to its working history, it is likely to develop destructive behaviors if it is bored or has an abundance of energy. As a whole the Cairn Terrier is a known to be an extremely friendly, affectionate and playful breed who generally enjoys meeting new people. It is important to remember that Cairn Terriers are terrier: which means that they are independent, tough, alert and have a high prey drive which may lead to it chasing other small household pets.
