This book deals with the phenomenon known in the history of Brazilian Catholicism as the Catholic Restoration. The Catholic Restoration was a project of action of the Catholic Church with the republican political elites and the society in the conjuncture that started in the 1920s and lasted until the mid-1950s. In this project, for the first time, the laity was called to be protagonists through the creation of centers of production and diffusion of Catholic thought, as well as the organization of large public events to demonstrate faith and, at the same time, the importance of Catholicism in society. The book seeks to analyze this phenomenon in Maranhão, more specifically in the inland city of Caxias, the gateway to the actions of the Catholic hierarchy in the so-called sertão of Maranhão.
