Gabriele D'Annunzio (Pescara, 12 marzo 1863 - Gardone Riviera, 1 marzo 1938) è stato uno scrittore, poeta, drammaturgo, militare, politico, giornalista e patriota italiano, simbolo del Decadentismo e celebre figura della prima guerra mondiale. Soprannominato "il Vate", cioè "poeta sacro, profeta", cantore dell'Italia umbertina occupò una posizione preminente nella letteratura italiana dal 1889 al 1910 circa e nella vita politica dal 1914 al 1924. È stato definito eccezionale e ultimo interprete della più duratura tradizione poetica italiana e come politico lasciò un segno nella sua epoca e un'influenza sugli eventi che gli sarebbero succeduti.
