The Chinook is a rare breed of sled dog that originates from the United States of America. The breed was developed in the state of New Hampshire in the early 20th century and is not the official state dog. The breed was developed by a single man named Arthur Treadwell Walden in 1917 and the entire breed's lineage can be traced to a single male dog named 'Chinook' - hence the breed's name. The breed's father, 'Chinook, ' was a mix of a husky and a tawny Mastiff-like male which lead him to have a large broad Mastiff-like head with dropped ears and the athletic build of a husky. 'Chinook' was bred with Belgian Shepherd dogs, Canadian Eskimo dogs and German Shepherds to create the Chinook breed. The breeding pool for Chinooks dwindled during the second World War and was as small as 11 by the mid-1980s but due to groups of enthusiasts the breed managed to survive. The breed was traditionally used as a working sled dog but is now more commonly found as a house hold family pet. As a whole the breed is incredibly affectionate and playful especially towards children. It is also an intelligent breed that is eager to learn and please its owners. Despite the breed not being known to show aggression it is still important to make sure that you Chinook is properly socialized with children, strangers and other animals during its puppyhood.
