The Christian Goddess examines the goddess-figures in the fantasies and fairy tales of George MacDonald. Bonnie Gaarden asserts that MacDonald, a Victorian Scot who wrote one of the first adult fantasy novels produced in English and became a powerful influence on C. S. Lewis, also "anticipated the modern quest for the feminine face of God. " Gaarden analyzes the feminine divinities in MacDonald's fantasy literature both as archetypes identified by Carl Jung and his followers and as emblems of MacDonald's Romantic Christian theology, which couples orthodox Trinitarianism with universalism-the belief that all will be saved.
