The Christian Way is a study manual for persons or groups who are seeking a fuller understanding of the way of life represented in the teachings of Jesus. It is based on the collection of Jesus's words found in the so-called Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), a document that biblical scholars believe functioned in the early church as a catechism. The manual is not intended primarily as a textual commentary, but focuses rather on the significance of Jesus's words for our own time. It will achieve its purpose if it encourages those who use it to walk in the way in which Jesus points us in his teachings. It is hoped that it will also contribute to a revival of the use of the Sermon on the Mount as a catechetical resource in Christian churches. John W. Miller participated in the formation and growth of the Reba Place Fellowship in Evanston, Illinois--a house church in the Anabaptist-Mennonite tradition. The Christian Way was developed initially as a study resource for those seeking membership in this Christian fellowship. The author received his graduate education in theology at Princeton Theological Seminary and the University of Basel and also holds a Master's Degree in English Literature from New York University. He has taught at the Mennonite seminaries in Goshen and Elkhart, Indiana, and at North Park and Garrett Theological Seminaries in the Chicago area. For a four-year period he served as Director of Mental Health Rehabilitation Services at the Chicago State Hospital. In the fall of 1969 he joined the faculty of Conrad-Grebel College, an affiliate of the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario.
