In his youth, James Merrill wrote during elementary and middle school, trying to escape the drudges of real life. Eventually his characters began to have a real life, and to give that life a permanent place was his true desire. He grew up in Buda, Texas. He graduated from a small alternative high school, the Academy at Hays.
