In this book, I offer a double look at the two sides of the city, the centre of Montpellier and its suburb, La Paillade. The aim is to analyse the way in which the suburb exists in relation to the city centre and the way in which its inhabitants experience the urbanity proposed by the centre. The aim is, of course, to understand how life in the suburbs can determine and/or influence the destiny of the inhabitants, especially the young.This work was carried out almost twenty years ago, yet it is still relevant today, because the problems of the suburbs have not changed, they have just become more acute. Moreover, all the known and recognized problems of the suburbs have been forgotten, since unfortunately, they are now only seen through the prism of radicalization leading to violence and the cultural and religious differences of their inhabitants. Consequently, I felt it was important to publish this work, as is, without updating it, to recall the not so distant time when the problems of the suburbs were still studied from the urban, social and economic angle.
