In today's twenty-first century, we live in a world of perfect means, but confused goals. The crisis momentarily is unpredictable as politics - and uncontrollable as inflation. It is the breakdown of morality and discipline in the family. Behind this background, "The times are confusing", and young people everywhere are searching for a standard to believe in, an example to follow, and a world they can relate to. We must accept that Society can only be as strong as the family. Regrettably, as you look around at our fellow human beings, you find it hard to ignore the fact that very few are fulfilled and leading focused lives. Most of them are unable to cope with their problems and the circumstances of daily living. Resignation to mediocrity has become a way of life. The feeling of inadequacy causes them to blame society, people, circumstances and surrounding conditions for their failure and disappointments. The idea that people and things control their lives is so ingrained in their thinking that they normally will not respond to coherent arguments. With the world presently experiencing enormous changes, the importance of the family is crucial. Nations are hostile to each other - churches philosophically disagree and censure each other - parents are antagonistic towards children and children are defiant against parents. It is for these reasons that the protection of the family is ensured and that the family positively motivates our children for a better future. Our two main goals as parents and leaders should be to help the children gain self-esteem and self-discipline, along with teaching our youth the advantages of self-discipline. We cannot afford to incarcerate everyone who breaks the law, so we must, ourselves, be shining examples of good. If democracy is to survive and its precious strength are not to be strangled by international and internal chaos, then we must get on with the work of constructively analyzing our family system.

"RICHARD C. DEMERITTE a Chartered Accountant by profession was appointed auditor general of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas in February 1980. In 1984 he was appointed High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and later on as The Bahamas' first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany; the Republic of France; and the European Economic Community. As a diplomat his leadership qualities, social grace, tact and international contacts were notable and created the unique opportunity for him in his professional life. Simultaneously his Foreign Service experience made him an excellent role model in the diplomatic circle. While in Great Britain, in addition to his ambassadorial appointments, he was invited to serve on the Council of the Association of International Accountants UK. This was a unique accomplishment, as his professional studies and certification was undertaken under the AIA. He was elected and served as the first non British President of the Association on November 1st. 1985 for a three-year term. He simultaneously served as Chairman of the Council during this period and continued to sit as a member of Council of the AIA from 1984 to 2014. He returned to the Bahamas in 1988 to resume the position of auditor general and retired from the public service in July 1996 and established his accounting firm, MGI Richard C. Demeritte & Co. Chartered Accountants & Management Consultants."
