Volume I of the four-volume series provides the cultural context for improving classroom practice to build cross-cultural understanding and promote excellence in student learning. Module One explains why classroom practice to build cross-cultural understanding is needed. Readers learn, in Module Two, how American schools and classrooms came to be as they are. Related to Modules One and Two is the perspective to be gained in Module Three where readers are able to examine schools and classrooms through the lens of critical pedagogy. After studying the three modules in Volume I, readers are sure to be motivated to alter typical classroom practices and apply culturally-compatible practices to embrace all students. Readers of Volume I gain new knowledge, deeper insights, an openness to questioning existing school practices, and a rationale for the methods in the three classroom practice volumes.
