Autorenporträt
Mark Antony Lower (1813–1876) was a reputed English historian, lexicographer, and pioneer in the study of heraldry. His literary style combined erudition with a unique flair for examining the origins and histories of surnames and coats of arms. Lower devoted himself to local history and antiquities, which he popularized through his writings. 'The Curiosities of Heraldry' is one of his notable works and reflects Lower's deep engagement with the symbolic and historical aspects of heraldry. Published in 1845, the book stands out for its scholarly yet accessible exploration of heraldic symbolism, demonstrating his ability to weave complex notions into a readable narrative that resonated with both academic and general audiences. Lower's contributions to the field extended beyond this work, underpinning his reputation as a key figure in Victorian historiography and genealogy. His work in the 'Curiosities of Heraldry' laid the groundwork for subsequent scholarship in heraldic studies. As a seminal figure in Sussex history, Lower also co-founded the Sussex Archaeological Society, contributing further to our understanding of that region's past. His texts remain important references for those interested in heraldry, nomenclature, and Victorian approaches to historical study.
