The year is 1888, two decades after the American Civil War. An ancient evil has slept unseen in the deep places of the earth since the war ended. All the death and destruction in the war provided plenty of food. It slept deeply for two decades, satiated on the souls of the slain. Now it is awake. It is hungry. Having snared a human servant, it is luring the unwary to its lair in order to satisfy its dark craving for men's souls. Jonathan Best is one of those souls. A divinity student in Nashville, Best is snared by one of his classmates who is under the beast's spell and seduced into a trip to the wilderness in Alabama, where a chimney into the underworld leads to a lair of fear, despair, and death. Best, however, is not easily taken. He, in fact, undertakes a rescue for two companions who fall into the pit. Never has anyone come into the beast's lair and emerged alive. Never has anyone taken its prey at the very moment of consumption. Until now. Best is now a marked man, but he is also now a man with a mission for beneath Nashville, more of the malevolent predators lurk.
