They say life begins at conception. For me, life began when I was able to remember, and some of my earliest memories take me to a dark place, underground, where my family and I were hiding in bunkers; hiding and praying until it was safe to go out again. These early events in my life shaped the path I was to take, resulting in my family and I crossing oceans, building a home in a new land, forging new relationships and burying old ones while they were still alive. Being on survival mode, it was easy to live in the present and plan for the future, but the past was left behind, or so I thought, until it re-entered by conscious mind in the form of nightmares, forcing me to re-visit each buried memory. The Darkness I Carry explores themes of war and displacement, lost relationships, and one's search for love and belonging. The poems in this book are a gentle reminder that light and darkness co-exist and one must sit and navigate through their dark experiences to find the light in them, so that they may shed their fears and move on to the future with hope.
