John Crossley began his latest career as a historian nearly twenty-five years ago. In 2011 he published Hernando de los RÃos Coronel and the Spanish Philippines in the Golden Age (Ashgate), which has received excellent reviews. For many years before that he researched, lectured and taught mathematics at Oxford University, and then mathematics and computer science at Monash University, Australia. He started worked on the history of mathematics in the 1970s but from the 1990s has worked on Parisian music theory with Constant Mews and Carol Williams. About 2007 he started working on the early Spanish Philippines. He has published over 100 scholarly works including more than twenty books, and has successfully advised more than twenty PhD graduates. Now an Emeritus Professor at Monash University he is currently continuing with work on Parisian music theory but also on a translation of a previously unpublished history of the Philippines dating from around 1600, the Lilly Historia, which has provided many insights for this book.
