Jack Matthews' arrival in Mammoth Lakes Village was solely to search for Ann and Larry Phillips. His visit develops into something far beyond a search for missing persons. Matthews is told that the Phillips were avid skiers. There is a persistent rumor in the Village that the Phillips attempted skiing the Crest, a trail described by the experts as The Deadly Run. Skiing that Run remains the fantasy of dreamers, and an extreme challenge for the experts. The evidence mounts that the Phillips met with foul play. More than one homicidal suspect apparently lurks in the area. Suspicions even include a beast-like recluse whose nomadic home exists in the high mountain back country. When William Campbell searches the Crest with Jack-their findings are startling. In the process Jack contacts Kathy Gray, a beautiful woman suffering from a broken heart. Jack's short association with her leads to a life-threatening encounter. When the Phillips' cabin is searched, intrigue builds, additional clues are analyzed and more becomes known about the missing Phillips. They may not have been "the ideal couple". A multitude of seemingly disconnected factors are ultimately drawn together by Matthews to bring about a most dramatic conclusion. In The Deadly Run, intrigue, love, sex, fear, violence and creative detective work ideally combine to create a most thrilling and readable novel.
