After graduating from Burnett High School, William Lawrence Drake served in the US Army from 1965 to 1969. Following his service, he attended Bishop College in Dallas. He holds a master's degree from Sam Houston State University in criminal justice social rehabilitation, and during his career has worked at Sam Houston State University, Bishop College, and Mountain View College. He retired in 2020 to start a business, Drake & Drake Small Claims Court Consultants, LLC. The pandemic hindered significant success for his business. William lives with his wife, Cynthia, with whom he has one daughter, two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
