The purpose of this study is to identify the factors influencing the demand for crop insurance in north western province in Sri Lanka. Such factors included in the study are Premium; income level; land extent; expenditure and Knowledge. The study sample comprises of 120 farmers in north western province.Crop insurance would be a more effective and beneficial risk management mechanism in the country. This research study shows that the farmers lack awareness of benefits insurance policies can bring in comparison to other coping methods they use. When farmers have clear idea of the concept of insurance, they tend to obtain insurance more and when they have insurance, they often use it as a risk managing tool, with other financial tools.
