George Sand (1804-76), eigentlich Amantine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, verheiratete Baronin Dudevant, zählt zu den großen Autorinnen der Weltliteratur. Die französische Schriftstellerin und frühe Kämpferin für die Rechte der Frau war Mitarbeiterin von 'Le Figaro' und verfasste zahlreiche Romane und Dramen. Sie war mit vielen Schriftstellern und Künstlern ihrer Zeit befreundet und hatte unter anderem Beziehungen mit Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Honoré de Balzac und Frédéric Chopin. George Sands libertäres Auftreten, sie trug gerne Männerkleidung, und ihre Vorstellungen hinsichtlich der Rolle der Frau sorgten in der Pariser Gesellschaft für Skandale.
