The purpose of this book is to explore the use of the Chinese demonstrative determiners zhe and na in the discourse as discourse markers. The framework of this study is based on Halliday and Hasan¿s classification of cohesion. The corpus in the thesis mainly comes from recordings of daily TV programs in Taiwan, or created examples accepted by native speakers. The study proposes that there exist pragmatic, syntactic and semantic requirements for the use of zhe and na in the discourse.
