Duluth clings to a rocky hillside where clusters of houses nestle amid broad expanses of woods and meadows and where cascading streams tumble toward the vast waters of Lake Superior. Duluthians, most of whom are but a few minutes walk from a forest trail or a creek-side overlook, treaure the green space that was preserved for future generations by early city planners. In these images, Craig and Nadine Blacklock have captured the essence of Duluth-the bedrock on which it is built; the waters that flow through it; the great lake at its base; the glowing wildflowers and stately trees that give it life. The photographs in The Duluth Portfolio will refresh memories and inspire Duluthians and visitors alike to explore the city with new vision. The Blacklocks present Duluth’s natural beauty with stunning clarity as they take us on a photographic journey to a place they love. The Duluth Portfolio “offers an evocative look at one of Minnesota’s most beautiful cities. These poignant Blacklock photographs not only commemorate Duluth’s natural history, but also focus our collective attention on the necessity of preserving the natural environment.” John Steffl, Artistic Director of the Duluth Art Institute Nadine and Craig Blacklock each photograph their subjects “in a way that elevates natural scenes to artistic expression.” Sam Cook, Duluth News-Tribune Blacklock photographs are also seen in other books including those of the National Wildlife Federation, the Sierra Club, Reader’s Digest, and Time-Life. Magazine credits include Airone, Audubon, Canoe, Lake Superior, National Geographic Traveler, National Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer, and Smithsonian. Their original prints have been shown in many galleries and are part of numerous private and corporate collections, including the Polaroid Corporate Collection and the Tweed Museum of Art. Several of their posters have won awards from the Printing Industries of America.
