The book provides an alternate history of American television that compares it to British television, and explains the influence of Dennis Potter's The Singing Detective on the development of long-form television and the evolution of drama shows and sitcoms. The work considers a wide range of network and cable television shows, paying special attention to the work of Steven Bochco, David Milch, and David Simon, and spotlighting the influence of graphic novels and literary novels in changing television.

Autorenporträt
Greg Metcalf grew up in northern England, an avid reader and lover of history. Moving to South Africa in his late teens, he subsequently spent his career in the corporate world, holding senior positions in a number of countries across the African continent. In 2017 he and his wife, Belinda, immigrated to Canada, settling in Vancouver. In 2020 they moved to Nova Scotia, purchasing an inn in the picturesque Digby area. Greg has always enjoyed a passion for fiction, and has always harboured an ambition to join those who have added their own contribution to this wonderful art.
