They examine the role of the state within welfare systems using case studies of pensions, health insurance, housing and personal social services. Roger Goodman is a Lecturer in the Social Anthropology of Japan and Fellow of St Antony's College, University of Oxford. Gordon White, who died suddenly on 1 April 1998, was Professorial Fellow in Politics and Development Studies, University of Sussex. Huck-ju Kwon is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Public Administration, Sung Kyun Kwan University, Seoul, Korea.
