What does a lonely poltergeist, a floating boy, a sensory overload condition, a book that predicts the future, and a homeless man's supernatural miracle have in common? These are just some of the subjects in 'The Edge of Imagination' by Tom Catalano. 'The Edge of Imagination' is Catalano's tenth book. It contains eleven short stories of urban science fiction, mystery, drama, and psychological suspense for adults and teens. The stories in 'The Edge of Imagination' are described as science fiction, but they do not take place on another planet or in space. There are no monsters, laser battles, or graphic violence. Rather, the stories take the reader on a journey much more mysterious -- into the depths of their imagination. Like the man who questions his sanity when he repeatedly wakes up in a different reality. Or the patient who undergoes experimental surgery to correct a unique sensory overload condition and must deal with the unexpected results. Or the man who is given a chance to go back in time and 'fix' one thing in his life. Or the poltergeist who would go to any length for human love, including murder. Characters are put in unusual situations then must deal with the conflicts of their situation, environment, or what they perceive as reality. 'The Edge of Imagination' evokes the style of Rod Serling's 'The Twilight Zone.' That is not coincidental. "Growing up, I was very much influenced by 'The Twilight Zone' television program," the author admits. "I was always fascinated by a suspenseful storyline that surprised me with an ending I didn't expect. Rod Serling was a master of that." Two of the stories in 'The Edge of Imagination' have received recognition in science fiction short story competitions. 'Sedate State' focuses on an advertising executive who wrestles with drug dependency in a peculiar near-future society. 'Balloon Boy' follows the misadventures of a boy who is in every way normal except that he was born with a unique physical condition -- he floats in the air. Tom Catalano is also the author of 'Tall Tales & Short Stories' and eight books of poetry. 'The Edge of Imagination' stretches our curiosity and takes us on a journey into the unknown corners of our mind.
