The city of Caracas, founded in 1567, has had ejidos since 1594, when the Governor of the Province of Venezuela, Don Diego de Osorio, decreed them as such, with the purpose of providing Santiago de León with a reserve of forests, water, pastures and firewood for its neighbors and for its urban expansion.
