Recent works include the historical musical "First Freedom" (with a score by Emmy-award winning composer Sam Cardon); "My Jo" (based on the works of Louisa May Alcott); the comedy "Geeks & Gangsters" (inspired by the true story of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster-the Cleveland teenagers who, during the 1930's, created Superman) and the critically-acclaimed musical, "A Southern Christmas Carol." His most recent collaboration with Matt Bean is the new outdoor musical, "Chief Little Will," which is presented each summer at the Mountainside Theatre in Cherokee, North Carolina. Dr. Matt Bean (Music) is Professor of Musical Theatre and Voice at Western Illinois University where he teaches vocal technique, singing/acting skills, and Musical Theatre History. In October 2012 Matt and his wife Becky performed "Song by Song by Sondheim" in concert. His articles have been published in the Journal of Singing and The Sondheim Review. His new musical with book and lyrics by Rob Lauer, "Chief Little Will," will go into permanent repertory beginning Summer 2015 at the Mountainside Theater in Cherokee, North Carolina. In April 2014, Dr. Bean served as musical director and conductor for his 21st show for WIU, "Oklahoma!" His former students are currently performing on Broadway, in National touring companies, and in regional theatres throughout the country.
