François Fénelon war französischer Erzbischof von Cambrai und Schriftsteller, geistlicher Berater der zweiten Gattin Ludwigs des XIV.und Erzieher des kaiserlichen Enkels. Durch die Publikation seines Romans Die seltsamen Begebenheiten des Telemach verlor er seine einflussreiche Position. Seine offene Kritik am Absolutismus führte zu seiner Verbannung.
