The factors examined were: decoding, comprehension, self-esteem, attitudes and abilities. A positive example of the Literacy class and a below grade level learner is illustrated. The results of this study indicated that support at home and at school are contributors to a student s academic success. The interventions available in the Literacy class helped the student to improve in reading during the small amount of time that the study was conducted. Students that are struggling in reading can still enjoy reading and like to read in the classroom and at home. Retention is not always the best option for struggling students because of the possibility of retention in the future. A student who is below grade level can improve in reading.
