Acupuncture represents an interesting alternative in the treatment of pain. However, some patients are still reluctant to have acupuncture. This fear of receiving such treatment could be due to a phobia of needles. The aim of our study was to evaluate the knowledge, fear and attitude of patients towards acupuncture and to find the influencing factors. Our sample consisted of a majority of women (75%), the average age was 57 years. The mean score of the fear of acupuncture scale was 18, 20 and 39 respectively for fear of needles, adverse effects and acupuncture. These scores corresponded to moderate fear. Fear of needles or acupuncture was nonsignificantly associated with women, whereas fear of adverse effects was similar in both sexes. We noted the lack of association between age and fear.
