As global water scarcity continues to rise at unprecedented rates, the importance of sustainable water resource management is imperative to protect water as a finite resource. Water self-sustainability within a defined system and scale eliminates water entering and exiting the system thus limiting the impact on surrounding water resources. Nonetheless, is it feasible to create these self-sufficient systems? Water scarcity is a social issue, as if one was to take away all of the social and political barriers surrounding water supply, there would be enough water for the global population for basic needs such as consumption. However, in reality, there are social issues hindering management of water resources and there needs to be a shift towards a better understanding of this resource, its use and its effective management. Incentives and/or tools need to be in place to make water self-sufficiency a feasible option, as the adoption of such a system is a powerful step towards sustainable management of future water resources.
